TERRAM, the geosy nthetics manufacturer, has won a contract to help safeguard the local environment around the Milford Haven oil refinery in South Wales .The company, which produces a range of products for applications such as drainage, filtration, erosion control and tree root protection, was given the job of developing a ground engineering scheme to minimise the refinery's environmental impact on the surrounding green area and lagoon. To contain potential oil spills and reinforce the green earth protection bund that ·forms part of the perimeter between the site and the lagoon, TERRAM was require'd to provide protection to a geomembrane liner installed along a stretch of barrier adjacent to the lagoon to confine any leakage of contaminated water off the site'.The project also specified protection for the newly"installed geomembrane liningfrom damage while allowing a vegetated finish to the slope. The company's answer was to supply a modified version of Erocell 20/15, one of its landscape products. A lightweight textile material, Erocell is supplied flat in panel form which is expanded on site to create a honeycomb structure suitable for in-filling.The modification was designed to allow the insertion of tendons on which the Erocell was suspended; the usual anchor pin method could not be applied in this case because it would puncture the newly-installed geomembrane liner.Martin Lambley, Terram's business development manager, explains: "This strategy will ensure there is no contamination or spillage from the refinery while minimising visual impact. Erocell has an excellent track record on terrains like the one at Milford Haven."The honeycomb style cellular system can be filled with seeded topsoil, aggregate and vegetation to give all a natural appearance while supporting the free movement of water and nutrients for a healthy soil environment."TERRAM products are currently being used in oil and gas projects throughout the world.
