Water can be a major problem in building construction and civil engineering for engineers during construction and for clients after completion. 70% of all structural damage is caused by water. In basements, the majority of such damage originates from moisture penetration due to poor drainage or faulty sealing. Conventional drains usually consist of a mineral layer more than 30 cm thick; ensuring adequate filter stability in such layers is often not cost-effective, as a multi-layer system may be required. Due to their thickness, these conventional mineral drains may cause difficulties at the design stage, and drain performance deteriorates over time due to sediment clogging. For lasting effective drainage, it therefore is advisable to use drainage mats consisting of a synthetic core and filter layers. When waterproofing basement walls and similar structures, a frequent challenge is protecting the membrane seal or bitumen layer against perforation by stones or other sharp objects. Drainage mats do not only provide the drainage required, but they also protect watertight membranes and coatings, thus preventing such damage.Soil-borne noise from surface and underground railways and heavy goods traffic etc. is transmitted to surrounding structures and may be a significant problem. This effect can be greatly reduced by using a flexible, lightweight drainage product which acts as a noise insulation barrier. All Enkadrain products have been designed on these basic principles: they consist of a lightweight three-dimensional core, covered on one or both sides with a nonwoven, woven or coat nonwoven or membrane depending on the specific requirements. These products' key characteristics are the high permeability, drainage, flexibility, ease in handling, biological and chemical resistance to substances naturally occurring in the soil, and compliance with fire safety requirements up to fire resistance of the Swiss deep tunnel standards.
