Of Konstantin Grcic (Munich, 1965) his colleagues say that he is the new Achille Castiglioni. They recognise in him the marks of genius that the master left in all his designs, the capacity to innovate with shapes and his outstanding profile as an industrial designer. Grcic represents perfection; he works thinking of industry and makes an art out of it. Today he is one of the most influential designers in the world. Established designers recognise him and the new and youngest adore him. He has his own style which cannot be compared to that of anyone else. It is recognised in the functionality and simplicity of his designs, which are apparent, because concealed behind them there is always a lesson in technique. The table he designed for BD in 2009 was a challenge which called for the collaboration of leading engineers. Grcic found his inspiration in classical pieces by BD, such as the Hypostila shelving (in production since 1979), to develop an aluminium envelope with a minimal profile, made by an extrusion process, which can reach lengths of up to 360 cm and is supported on two simple wooden legs. The B Table was the first in the Extrusions collection and an aesthetic which is the product of a combination of industrial and manual processes. The result is a “highly crafted” piece which surprises with its solidity and lightness. To complement it, Konstantin Grcic has now designed the B chair, a wooden chair with pieces of aluminium in its structure. The legs are X-shaped and the seat folds, which allows for horizontal stacking and pays tribute to the name of the collection. A detail of genius. The decorative touch is concealed beneath the seat, which is offered in a varied and attractive range of colours.
